Pulsed Laser Deposition of Epitaxial Non-Doped PbTiO3 Thin Films from PbO–TiO2 Mosaic Targets

PbTiO3 (PTO) suffers from difficulty in preparing high-density robust bulk ceramics, which turn has been a bottleneck thin films growth with physical vapor deposition (PVD) methods. In the present work, we prepared non-doped PTO by pulsed laser (PLD) method either single target or mosaic consisting of PbO and TiO2 pie-shaped pieces. On target, irradiation caused selective ablation Pb, resulting Ti-rich cone-shaped pillar structure on surface, whereas irradiated surface pieces was smoother. Epitaxial deposited SrTiO3 (001) substrates pie-chart targets PbO:TiO2 areal ratio 3:5 to 5:3 resulted composition, crystallinity, flatness, ferroelectric properties almost independent ratio. The averaged composition each film close stoichiometric, suggesting compositional self-control mechanism. For growing epitaxial high-quality films, PbO–TiO2 is advantageous easiness handling stable structure.
